DR.JYOTISH PATEL
MD Pediatrics, Sickle Cell Expert
He was born on 21st September 1961 in a remote tribal village namely Borisavar Taluka: Songadh District: Tapi of Gujarat state India. Up to 5th std he studied in Ashramshala. From 6th std to 10th std he studied in Sarvajanik high school, Songadh. He did his 11 & 12th std in The Kadod High School, Kadod. He completed MBBS and MD Pediatrics from Government Medical college, M S University, Vadodara.
His father Ashokbhai & mother Vasantaben were teacher and follower of Gandhian philosophy.
in 1983, while doing internship he came across few cases of Sickle cell who were different than he studied from text book. In 1985, he wrote a thesis: Clinico-haematological correlation of Sickle cell anemia MD Pediatrics Curriculum.
In Next Fews years, he recognized lack of laboratory diagnostic facility, lack of treatment facility, lack of social awareness, lack of government program, lack of political willingness in rural area where affected cases live lifetime.
The answer to all these was to start from a scratch & establish facility for laboratory diagnosis, treatment & awareness.
In 1989, he started Shishudeep children hospital in Bardoli Dist: Surat which is situated in tribal area having large number of Sickle cell cases. He established laboratory for Sickle cell diagnosis with a minimum charge of Rs.50 per case. Along with wife Dr.Bharati, they started doing free Sickle camps in rural areas with local support of volunteers from village. Education of society through pamphlets, news paper articles, radio talks, seminars was done to generate awareness.
He started delivering talk on Sickle cell anemia to medical associations mainly in tribal region so as share knowledge & wisdom. He also did clinical research on various aspects and presented data in various state, national & international conferences.
He, along with friend Narendra Gamit, designed ‘Sickle cell swa suraksha abhiyan’ project & executed it in 11 villages. The results were analyzed and were shown to Government of Gujarat. The concept was well appreciated and adopted.
As a Sickle cell expert, he rendered his free service to Government of Gujarat, Chhattisgarh & Maharashtra.
With better survival of SCA cases to adulthood, there was a need of managing specific issues like pregnancy, hip replacement-gall bladder-spleen surgery, ICU support for Acute Chest Syndrome under one roof with 24×7 facility of doctors interested in Sickle cell.
