ABOUT SICKLE CELL

Sickle cell is a genetically inherited disorder of blood. It affects hemoglobin structure as result of which red blood cell gets deformed and becomes sickle shaped. Every red cell carries oxygen to every cell of human body, every minute.

Sickle cell has difficulty in travelling through blood vessels especially through capillaries which has smallest diameter of 5.5 micron. Even a normal red blood cell, round in shape with average 7.2 micron diameter, has to flex to pass through smaller lumen of capillaries i.e 5.5 micron. Sickle cell blocks capillaries due to less deformability which in turn decreases oxygen supply to a cell. This results in to cell/tissue damage. This results into PAIN, a most common symptom of sickle cell disease patient.

Such Sickle Unsickle cycle of red blood cell is a continuous process. This process gets enhanced during sudden change in an environment, bacterial or viral infection, malaria, dengue fever, anxiety, over exertion, exam stress, irregular life style. This in turn precipitates Sickle cell crisis which has pain as a most common symptom.
